Grade II Listed Slate Roof Repairs – Shincliffe, Durham

Northern Heritage Roofing recently completed a programme of specialist roof repairs to a large Grade II listed property in Shincliffe, Durham. With the building’s historic character and original slate roof to consider, the works were carefully carried out using traditional materials and methods sympathetic to the existing structure.

Scope of Works

The project included:

  • Chimney leadwork upgrades – Existing cement fillets were carefully removed from two large main chimney stacks and replaced with traditional lead stepped flashings, providing a more durable and appropriate weatherproof detail.
  • Valley re-pointing – The roof valleys were carefully re-pointed where the existing mortar had deteriorated.
  • Natural slate repairs – Up to 100 defective, cracked and weathered slates were removed and replaced using carefully selected reclaimed natural Welsh slates, helping the repairs blend with the existing historic roof covering.
  • Roof access ventilationLead slate bat access vents were installed to two elevations of the roof, providing suitable access points while keeping the new installations sympathetic to the appearance of the traditional slate roof.

Project Completion

Despite the scale of the property and the care required when working on a listed building, the complete programme of repairs was completed in approximately four full working days.

The finished works have improved the roof's weather resistance while retaining the traditional appearance and character of this impressive Grade II listed property.
