Project Description

Client: Private Residential

Project Name: Slate Repairs & New EPDM Rubber Roof Installation
Completion Date: 15/08/2024
Contractor: Northern Heritage Roofing

Project Overview

Northern Heritage Roofing completed a dual-scope roofing project on a characterful property in Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear. The job included the installation of a new EPDM rubber roof to an L-shaped garage/kitchen extension and detailed repairs to the main slate roof using reclaimed Welsh slate.

The garage roof ran along the gable of the bungalow, while the kitchen roof section extended up into the main pitched roof at the rear of the property by approximately one metre. Both areas required a weather-tight, modern solution that would integrate cleanly with the existing structure and preserve the property's appearance.

Scope of Work

Garage/Kitchen EPDM Roof:

  • Removal of the old flat roof covering on both the garage and kitchen extension areas
  • Preparation of roof decking and substrate
  • Supply and installation of a new seamless EPDM rubber membrane
  • Careful sealing into the main roofline at the rear, where the kitchen roof met the main pitch
  • Custom detailing at junctions, upstands, and gable wall transitions
  • Water testing and final inspection

Slate Roof Repairs:

  • Removal and replacement of approximately 75 damaged slates, including hip slates
  • Sourcing and fitting of matching reclaimed Welsh slate
  • Use of copper nails and traditional fixing methods
  • Visual blend with original materials for seamless repair

Materials Used

  • Firestone EPDM rubber membrane
  • Plywood decking and adhesives
  • Reclaimed Welsh slates
  • Copper slate nails
  • Lead flashing and sealants where required

Challenges & Solutions

The junction between the new EPDM kitchen roof and the existing pitched slate roof posed a challenge in terms of sealing and water runoff. Our experienced team ensured that all detailing was watertight, with precise integration of the EPDM into the rear elevation. For the slate repairs, careful matching and placement were essential to maintain the building’s character.

Outcome

The completed project resulted in a highly durable, low-maintenance EPDM rubber roof that will serve the garage and kitchen extension for decades. The slate repairs restored the original appearance of the main roof, blending seamlessly with the aged slate and preserving the traditional aesthetic of the home.

Customer Feedback

"The new garage and kitchen roof looks fantastic and is a huge improvement. The slate repairs were done with such care – you can’t tell which ones were replaced! Really pleased with the standard of work and the professional approach of the team."
