Project Description

Client: Private Residential
Location: Hartlepool, County Durham
Service Provided: Flat-to-Pitched Roof Conversion
Date Completed: 07/04/2025
Contractor: Northern Heritage Roofing

Project Overview:
Northern Heritage Roofing was called in to resolve ongoing roofing issues on a lower-level kitchen extension in Hartlepool. The existing felt flat roof had been struggling to cope due to an unusually steep pitch, leading to repeated water ingress and deterioration over time. Our solution: convert the existing structure into a durable, well-ventilated pitched slate roof.

Scope of Work:
The project involved the full removal of the old felt flat roof and the design and build of a new pitched roofing system. The newly pitched roof was finished using high-quality slate to provide a timeless look and long-term performance.

Key Tasks Included:

  • Dismantling the existing felt roof and preparing the structure
  • Constructing a new timber frame to support the pitched roof
  • Installing breathable membrane, treated battens, and slate tiling
  • Tying into the adjacent flat garage roof to ensure proper drainage and structural cohesion
  • Leadwork and finishing details to maintain a watertight seal

Materials Used:

  • Natural slate tiles
  • Breathable underlay and treated timber battens
  • Structural timbers for the new pitch
  • Lead flashing and ridge systems

Challenges & Solutions:
The primary challenge was adapting a flat roofing base to support a pitched frame without affecting the adjoining garage roof. Our team engineered a custom transition point, integrating both roofing types while maintaining weather protection and visual symmetry. We also corrected previous drainage issues by adjusting fall direction and adding a bespoke lead detail.

Outcome:
The new pitched roof not only resolved the functional issues but also significantly improved the visual appearance of the property. It now offers a longer lifespan, better drainage, and an upgrade in insulation and weather resistance.

Customer Review:
"Really happy with the new pitched roof—massive improvement on the old felt one. Looks great, no more leaks, and the lads were spot on from start to finish. Would highly recommend." – Homeowner, Hartlepool
